I’m an advocate of traveling like an explorer, not just a tourist. I support this idea that every trip should be an opportunity for learning and discovering the unknown, for understanding other countries’ cultures and customs, and for simply enjoying the beauty that is surrounding us. I’m not traveling just to take pretty photos and post them online. Of course, being a travel blogger and a travel influencer comes with a responsibility towards my readers to provide them with quality content regarding travel itineraries, travel ideas, and tips and tricks. And photos are very important in this aspect. However, I feel like I also have to speak about the beauty of adopting a travel style that requires being mindful and present in each moment. Otherwise, I feel like I’m robbing you of the best part of traveling.
That being said, generally speaking, let’s not forget that photography is an important part of every trip or experience. Photos are visual collections of our memories and having a pretty physical or virtual album is the perfect way to store the highlights of your adventures. If you are looking for the perfect photo album for your travel, check out these cute albums, here. It is also a perfect gift for a friend that is a passionate traveler.
I try to make it one of my priorities to plan my photos by searching for the best locations. Places where the background and surroundings make the perfect canvas for my shoots. Who doesn’t love to have an aesthetic Instagram feed or a gorgeous photo album to show off to friends and family?
If you are planning a trip to Croatia and you are like me and love to take the best photos, or you are a passionate photographer and are looking out for the best scenery to test your skills, then keep reading this article. I will be sharing the most popular Instagram locations in Croatia.
Speaking of planning trips to Croatia, I have spent approx. one week in this amazing country and wrote an entire series of travel guides with all the things you need to see and experience. I will link all of them at the end of this article or you can choose ‘Croatia’ from the menu bar.
Croatia is one of the most beautiful and underrated countries in Europe. I know that Croatia is famous for Dubrovnik, the beautiful medieval town where GOT the pop-culture phenomenon was filmed. But I don’t feel like this country is as popular as France, Italy, or Spain. I spent a week in Croatia and I must say, it really impressed me with its gorgeous port cities, fantastic and out-of-this-world waterfalls, and unbelievable views. I learned that Croatia is so much more than Dubrovnik and I wrote an article with the top things you need to do and see in this country. You can read all about it here.
In this article I will be focusing only on the locations with the best Instagram potential, hence the title that made you link to this article. If you are curious about the camera that I’m currently using in most of these photos, you can find it here. It’s a Canon M50 Mirrorless. Some of them were also taken with Samsung Note 20 Ultra.
Here are the most popular Instagram locations in Croatia this year:
St Mark’s Church in Zagreb
Zagreb it’s a beautiful city where you will find many places perfect for your photos. However, this is a list of the most popular Instagram locations in Croatia, so I wanted to pick those that really stand out.
St Mark’s Church is one of those locations. This unique and amazing church is in the center of Saint Mark’s Square and is one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb, dating from the 13th century. With it, as your background you are going to take some killer shots for sure. Just look at this beauty! If you want to learn more about Zagreb and all the places you need to visit there, then check out this article, here.
Zagreb tram street
I don’t know what it is about tram streets that make them look so interesting in photos. I saw a lot of gorgeous shots of girls in pretty dresses on tram streets and got excited to try to take my own. So when I found this beautiful tram street in Zagreb, I couldn’t let the occasion pass.
You don’t need to search for the exact address. All you need is comfortable shoes, a cute or glamorous outfit, and your camera. You will find this spot, besides many others, just by walking around the city.
Sunset at Rovinj port
I think Rovinj is one of the most picturesque cities in Croatia. It’s vibrant, full of color, and with amazing views over the sea. Watching the sunset and using it as a background in your photos will enhance the romantic ambiance if you are going for that. I feel like Rovinj in itself is one of the most popular Instagram locations in Croatia. If you go on and explore the city on foot keep your camera at hand because the photo opportunities are endless.
Roman amphitheater in Pula
From the first moment I spotted the Colosseum in Pula, I thought to myself, is this Rome?! Nope, it’s not Rome, it’s just this underrated city in Croatia, named Pula. The Roman amphitheater facing the sea and the streets decorated with palm trees make this surprising landscape, perfect for your Instagram feed or photo collection.
Marjan Hill in Split
Marjan Hill is one of the most popular Instagram locations in Croatia and I know you can tell from the photos. There is a little climbing to do, but the effort is worth it. From Marjan Hill, you will have a memorable scenic overlook over Split. Take a few moments after you take your photos and enjoy the view and the atmosphere. If you want to know how to get to Marjan Hill, check out this article, with the Best 10 places to visit in Split, Croatia.
Kliss Fortress in Split
Kliss Fortress is a well-known place in Split, partly due to a famous TV show that used this landmark for filming scenes related to the City of Meereen.
No matter if you are a fan of Game of Thrones or not, you should visit Kliss Fortress anyway. This beautiful medieval fortress represents one of Croatia’s oldest strongholds. Thus, you can almost feel the ruins whispering stories about ancient battles and heroic actions. If you are looking for deep aesthetic photo scenes, you arrived at the perfect place. Walking around the fortress, you are going to find many spots that will inspire interesting ideas to test out your camera skills.
If you want to read all you need to know, before you visit Kliss Fortress, check out this article.
Fort Lovrijenac in Dubrovnik
If you are visiting Dubrovnik and are looking for stunning photo opportunities, this is definitely the place to choose. For sure, it’s one of the most popular Instagram locations in Croatia.
Like Kliss Fortress, this was a filming location for Game of Thrones. What I loved about this historic landmark, is that no matter what corner of the fort we were in, the view was breathtaking, offering different angles over the city or the endless sea.
And you want to know one more cool thing? The ticket was very cheap (compared to other landmarks in Dubrovnik), but the views are worth millions.
There is also a great spot where you can pose with Fort Lovrijenac in the background. You can find it by analyzing the picture below.
My final thoughts before your visit? Dress to impress! The scenery will do the rest of the job and make your photos look dreamy and Instagram-worthy.
Sulic Beach in Dubrovnik
I feel like Sulic Beach is a bonus photo opportunity to benefit from visiting Fort Lovrijenac. While climbing the stairs to the fort, at some point Sulic Beach will unravel before your eyes. The beautiful turquoise water, surrounded by hills and wild beaches makes this view unique. Even if this beach may not be included on many bucket lists for Dubrovnik, I consider it should become a popular Instagram location in Croatia and I encourage you don’t miss it.
Old Town streets in Dubrovnik
What a great way to discover new and unexpected photo spots, then walk a city on foot and explore every corner. I don’t know about you, but I admire those gorgeous photos taken by travel influences while walking (or pretending to) on narrow and lonely streets (never understood how you can find deserted streets in crowded cities).
I found that Dubrovnik was perfect to try out for myself the effect an old city can have in photography. I feel like narrow streets in old towns especially, should always be considered perfect for Instagram shots in any city. But Dubrovnik gets the golden ticket in this category for sure.
Put comfortable shoes on, and a great outfit, and begin your hunt for the perfect narrow street to use as your canvas in your photos. I was happy to find one that was deserted and I took the pictures that I envisioned. Well, my husband took them, but I contributed too, by posing for him 😂. Lucky, I know 🥰 (for the husband and finding a street without people)! And this, without planning the photos at 5 am 😂.
Waterfalls in Plitvice Lakes
I don’t need to tell you that Plitvice Lakes is a must on any Croatia travel itinerary. Besides the fact that visiting this waterfall wonderland is a special, entertaining, and gorgeous experience, this is also one of the most popular Instagram locations in Croatia.
The park has over 90 waterfalls and approx. 16 cascading lakes. Every one of these natural wonders is ideal for taking epic and outstanding pictures. The trail that will get you through the park is picturesque and will offer plenty of opportunities to take breaks, take your camera out and have fun with different sceneries. If you want to know more about Plitvice Lakes then read this detailed Plitvice Lakes Travel Guide.
Hint: try to plan your visit on a sunny day. Lighting is everything, especially if you have natural sceneries like in Plitvice Park.
Krka National Park
Krka National Park isn’t as famous as Plitvice Lakes is, but it’s a beautiful place with wonderful views and of course, several waterfalls. This is why I included it on this list of popular Instagram locations in Croatia.
The only problem is that it can get very crowded during summer, but if you plan your trip off-season or at hours that aren’t usually visited by the mass of tourists, you can take advantage of Krka National Park and its aesthetic potential in photos.
Of course, there are a few scenic overlook spots that you can ‘make’ look deserted if you wait your turn and put your photographic skills into action.
Check out this Krka National Park Travel Guide to learn more.
Sunset in Skradin
I know that Skradin is not on many bucket lists for Croatia. To think about it, I don’t know if I saw this city in trendy travel guides. I discovered Skradin by mistake. Well, not a mistake per se, but when we searched for accommodation close to Krka Park, we found that this was the closest city. We spent just one evening in this homey small city, enjoyed the sunset, took gorgeous photos, made friends with swans, and ate a delicious meal.
Skradin deserves its place on my recommended list of popular Instagram locations in Croatia.
If you are in this area or plan to see Krka National Park, I hope you choose to spend at least one day in Skradin as well.
I hope this article was useful, fun to read, and most importantly, it inspired you to have more fun with your camera while visiting Croatia. My other goal with this article is to get you excited about traveling to countries or destinations that aren’t necessarily viral on the Internet. No matter the place you visit, there will always be locations Instagram-worthy for you to try on.
