Things to Do During a Rainy Fall Day in the Countryside
A rainy fall day in the countryside is very different from a rainy fall day in the city. You know that rainy days during fall are usually long, steady, and sometimes accompanied by strong winds.
When you live in the city, there are still many things you can do during a rainy fall day — going to the mall, to restaurants, to events, or to friends’ houses. The rain doesn’t stop you from getting out, socializing, or finding ways to stay busy.
Meanwhile, in the countryside, your main activities and chores are usually outdoors. Chances are your house is far from your friends, family, or other places like malls or restaurants.
So I completely understand why long, rainy days in the countryside can seem depressing and isolating — you may feel stuck inside with nothing to do. And sometimes, those gloomy days can last for weeks.
If you have small children who need plenty of outdoor activity and variety in their daily routine, being stuck inside is even harder.
I get this — I really do. A few years back, I used to think the same way, but I’m here to tell you that a rainy fall day in the countryside isn’t meant to be depressing or lonely.
The secret?
Embrace the slow living lifestyle and see rainy days as an opportunity for connection, relaxation, and disconnection from stress and anxiety. Rainy days can be deeply therapeutic — they show us that we don’t need to rush, to constantly go outside, or to fill our days with endless tasks and goals.
Rainy days nurture the soil and are a gift for the plants, especially if we’ve been planting trees and flowers during fall. But at the same time, rainy days also nurture the calmness of our souls.
I know I’m getting deep here, but stay with me. Like I said, rainy fall days in the countryside are the perfect time to practice cozy countryside rituals and explore fall slow living ideas that make you feel grounded and peaceful.
I’ve written two articles — one where I share my own story with slow living and the steps you can take if you feel it’s calling you, and another where I talk about cozy rainy day ideas and routines that will nurture your heart. You can find both below:
- Cozy Rituals to Try This Fall: Authentic Ideas for a Warm Autumn
- The Cozy Living Mindset: Simple Ways to Embrace Daily Joy
And before you judge this cozy living thing as a trend or a Pinterest aesthetic, please understand that it’s not. Well, it’s not for me. It’s a lifestyle — one that we all need in our lives.
In this hectic, troubled world, where we’re always stressing out, always doing something, always on the go, checking things off our list while still feeling like we’re not doing enough — that we’re not enough — sometimes we just need a rainy fall day in the countryside to pause our hands and quiet our minds.
A good life isn’t defined by sunny days or by how productive we are — it’s defined by our peace of mind and by our intention to live in the present moment.
In this article, I’ve prepared a list of cozy things to do on a rainy day, all simple ideas that can fill your heart with joy and peace.
But before we start, take a moment to answer this:
What do you feel when you scroll through Instagram or Pinterest and see pictures of raindrops on windows, a steaming mug of coffee, and a cozy blanket next to a book?

Start the Morning Slow
Enjoy your coffee while listening to the rain
Start your day with intention and calm. A rainy fall day in the countryside is the perfect excuse to start your morning slowly. Stay in bed a little longer than usual and enjoy your coffee or tea while listening to the gentle sound of the rain.
I don’t think I need to convince you to stay in bed longer, wrapped in your favorite pyjamas by the window, or to sit outside on the terrace with a hot and delicious coffee — listening, smelling, and watching the rain fall.
I don’t know about you, but this is my favorite slow morning ritual and one of my top cozy rainy day ideas in the countryside.

Watch the raindrops and savor the quiet
A rainy fall day in the countryside isn’t about rushing to get things done or finding a backup plan to fill your day with tasks. It’s about being fully present and letting your senses absorb every sound, smell, and drop of rain.
On some rainy fall weekends, I love staying in bed with my husband and son, drinking coffee, watching his favorite TV show, and gazing out the window at the rain.
Pro tip: set your mind free from tasks, chores, or problems. Let the quiet of the rain become your background music — one of those fall slow living ideas that help you reconnect with peace.
Prepare a warm breakfast — oatmeal, pancakes, or eggs and toast
Every rainy fall day in the countryside deserves a warm and comforting breakfast. Remember, this is all about slowing down — preparing the food is part of the ritual, not just another task.
So make something you usually don’t have time for: oatmeal with fruit and chocolate, pancakes, waffles, or something saucy like shakshuka with eggs. Involve the whole family and take this opportunity to share a cozy morning together, while raindrops quietly run down your windows — a perfect example of cozy countryside rituals that turn an ordinary day into something special.
Create a Cozy Atmosphere Indoors
Soft lighting and Wrap yourself in a warm blanket
I’m not the kind of person who decorates the house for every occasion (except Christmas, of course!). But I do love to create an extra cozy atmosphere indoors during a rainy fall day in the countryside.
I’ll put on my cozy socks and wrap myself — and my favorite corners of the house — in a warm blanket. Softening the lighting can also do wonders for setting a calm, relaxing mood.
These little cozy countryside rituals make such a difference, turning an ordinary day into a peaceful retreat.
Decorate your home for fall — the perfect rainy day activity
I know there are people who love to refresh their homes for every season or occasion — and honestly, that’s pretty amazing. I don’t always have the energy or the interest to do that, because for me, cozy means something different.
But if you are one of those decorating souls, then lighting a few candles, playing soft acoustic music, or adding warm fall décor like pumpkins, dried flowers, and woven textures are all lovely cozy rainy day ideas.
And I have to say — if you’re planning to decorate your home for the fall season, doing it during a rainy fall day in the countryside is the perfect idea. Surrounded by nature and muted light, fall decorations feel even warmer and more comforting here.
It’s one of those fall slow living ideas that help you embrace the season and enjoy being indoors.
Cook or Bake Something Warm
Bake apple crumble, banana bread, or cinnamon rolls
There’s truly nothing cozier to do on a rainy fall day in the countryside than baking something warm and delicious — filling your home with that comforting, sweet smell.
Here are some cozy rainy day ideas for baking: banana bread, cinnamon rolls (which I absolutely love during the fall season), cookies, or pies — especially pumpkin and apple pies, since both are in season.
Involve your partner and kids, and don’t worry if the kitchen ends up a bit messy — it’s totally worth it. The view of raindrops on the windows, the scent and sound of the rain, and the warmth of baking together turn this into one of those cozy countryside rituals that feel like true connection time.
Enjoy your baking the same day, without rushing
Most of the time, when we bake, it’s for a reason — a birthday, a celebration, or when we’re expecting guests.
But a rainy fall day in the countryside is the perfect excuse to bake just because you want to. No reason needed.
Once your baking is done, make yourself a cozy drink like hot cocoa or tea and enjoy it slowly — maybe outside (if you can stay dry) or next to a big window.
I don’t know exactly how to put this into words, but there’s something truly magical about sipping hot cocoa and eating cinnamon rolls or apple pie while watching and listening to the rain. It’s one of those fall slow living ideas that remind you to pause and appreciate the simple joys — the very essence of cozy things to do on a rainy day.
Indulge in Simple Comforts
Read a cozy book or revisit a favorite movie
You know what else you should do during a rainy fall day in the countryside? Indulge in simple comforts — without feeling guilty or pressured by chores or work.
You can spend the rest of the day — or the entire day — reading a cozy fantasy book in bed or by the window, listening to the rain in the background. Or you can binge-watch your favorite fall movie or TV series.
One of my favorites is Supernatural — it will always be a fall gem for me, with all its creepy, gothic vibes that perfectly match the sound of rain outside.
It’s one of those cozy rainy day ideas that makes you appreciate being home and slowing down.
Spend time with loved ones or your pet
When the rain keeps you indoors, it’s the perfect opportunity to find cozy things to do on a rainy day with your partner or family. You can do a puzzle together, read books, build a complex LEGO set, or play a fun board game.
You can also invite friends over, prepare some snacks, bring all the pillows and cozy blankets, and spend the afternoon chatting, playing games, or simply catching up.
These small shared moments are the essence of cozy countryside rituals — simple, joyful, and deeply connecting. They remind us what fall slow living ideas are all about: warmth, presence, and togetherness.
Enjoy the Afternoon Calm
Take a quiet walk if the rain softens
If the rain softens, take the opportunity to go for a peaceful walk in your backyard or around your village. Spend some quiet time outdoors and feel the freshness of the air after the rain. Maybe watch the sunset, or make yourself another hot drink and enjoy it on your walk.
This small, mindful moment is one of those fall slow living ideas that help you reconnect with nature and appreciate the beauty of stillness.

Do a creative hobby — painting, writing, crafting, photographing
A rainy fall day in the countryside is the perfect time to dive into a creative project or hobby. If you have a terrace that keeps you dry, that’s even better — you can be outside while still enjoying the cozy rain atmosphere.
If you feel like writing, painting, or crafting something, take your materials outside or near a window and let the sound of rain inspire you.
In my case, I become so creative on rainy days. I love writing outside (or by a window) for my blog or any other creative work I’m doing. Living in the countryside — with its silence and calm — only deepens my creative flow. My words just keep coming, and I enjoy it so much that it doesn’t even feel like work.
If your passion is photography, now’s the perfect time to capture some unique, moody shots. Take advantage of the soft colors, misty air, and reflections that raindrops create — and take your camera for a spin.
These quiet, mindful activities are wonderful cozy rainy day ideas, turning a simple day indoors into a creative retreat and one of those heartfelt cozy countryside rituals that nourish your soul.
Evening Wind-Down
Cook a slow dinner (soup, stew, risotto)
What pairs better with a rainy fall day in the countryside than a slow, cozy, and saucy dinner?
Cook something comforting like a stew, risotto, or a rich, creamy pasta — and involve the whole family in the process. Preparing and eating together is one of those cozy countryside rituals that bring warmth and connection to the end of the day.
Light the fireplace or listen to a rainy playlist
If you have an indoor fireplace — or even an outdoor fire pit (if the rain has softened) — now is the perfect time to light it. Sit nearby, unwind, and let the gentle crackling of the fire mix with the soft sound of rain.
If you don’t have a fireplace, create a similar mood by listening to a rainy evening playlist or ambient sounds.
Don’t forget: a rainy fall day in the countryside is all about slowing down, living in the moment, and embracing coziness. That’s why it’s so important to end your day the same way you started it — gently, peacefully, and with intention.
It’s the essence of fall slow living ideas and one of the simplest yet most powerful cozy rainy day ideas you can practice.
Bonus Ideas for Cozy Rainy Days
Cozy things to do with kids
If you have kids — especially small ones — I know how challenging it can be to keep them occupied, particularly if you live in the countryside and they’re used to being outdoors every day.
Here’s a list of cozy things to do on a rainy day with little ones — activities that are fun and also a wonderful way to connect with them:
- Coloring books, painting, or any creative art project. I find these activities so relaxing and even therapeutic for us adults too. Our son is in this phase where he loves to color and draw together with us, and I treasure that time.
- Doing a puzzle — depending on your child’s age, this can be a quiet, engaging, and screen-free way to bond.
- Building LEGO sets. The complexity will depend on your kid’s age, but it’s a fun and satisfying activity for adults as well.
- Creative play, like building streets, train tracks, or whole little cities — perfect for sparking imagination.
- Reading books. This is one of my favorite hobbies, and I’ve tried to help my son love it too. Depending on their age, you can read to them, or plan a family reading session on the couch with cozy drinks.
No matter what you choose, this is one of the most heartwarming cozy rainy day ideas for families and one of my favorite cozy countryside rituals during a rainy fall day in the countryside.

Curling up with a good book is one of the simplest yet most rewarding fall slow living ideas — it slows down time and lets you escape into another world.
Cozy self-care rituals (bath, skincare, journaling)
If you’re like me and love a good self-care ritual — but often push it aside because you don’t have time or keep prioritizing chores — then a rainy fall day in the countryside is your perfect excuse to indulge guilt-free.
So, gather your bath salts and bubbles, your favorite face and body masks, and pour yourself a relaxing drink (a glass of wine works wonders here). Maybe bring your book or tablet with your favorite show, and allow yourself to fully unwind your mind and body.
This is not just pampering — it’s one of those cozy rainy day ideas that helps you reset, recharge, and return to yourself. It’s a gentle reminder that slow living and self-care go hand in hand, especially on peaceful rainy days.
