Outdoor Toys for Toddlers You’ll Love Having in the Countryside

Since we moved to the countryside, our routines — and especially our toddler’s play environment — have changed in the best possible way. Outdoor toys for toddlers have become one of our main focuses while organizing our backyard.

Playing outside is now part of our daily activities and easier than ever to enjoy.

The best part? You don’t need to plan or research a place to take your child to play. You just dress them, open the door — and that’s it.

Of course, if you also equip your courtyard with wooden outdoor toys or other items that encourage independent, creative, and skill-building play, you’ll have a very happy child — and parents too.

There are so many outdoor play ideas for toddlers these days. I feel like there’s a whole industry around outdoor toys, and it can be overwhelming to choose or limit yourself to just a few.

From experience, I can tell you that you don’t need them all. The quality and purpose of the toys matter far more than the quantity. Because if you give in to the temptation of buying too many, you’ll end up with a courtyard cluttered with ordinary toys that won’t get much use.

So, you can see this article as having a double purpose: helping you choose the right and most useful outdoor toys for toddlers without cluttering your backyard — and without turning it into a toy hazard.

If you live in the countryside (or dream of it), these toys will help your little one explore, imagine, and play for hours — the essence of countryside life with kids.

But before we get into the actual list, I thought it would be useful to point out a few criteria to follow when buying outdoor toys.

How to choose the best outdoor toys for toddlers without breaking the bank

Here are the criteria I find useful when choosing the right outdoor toys for toddlers:

  • Go for simple toys that mimic real outdoor activities — this way, you can involve your toddler in your daily countryside routines.
  • Invest in quality, not quantity. Buy outdoor toys for toddlers made from natural materials, like wood, and limit the use of plastics. This will also help you keep a beautiful aesthetic in your backyard.
  • Look for toys that will grow with your child. For example, a wooden house or gardening tools they can use for years to come, even if their purpose changes over time.
  • Choose toys that stimulate creativity, like sandboxes where your child can build and imagine.
  • Choose toys that encourage movement and help them stay active.
  • Don’t buy every outdoor toy you see on the market — make a list and choose one from each category: creativity, movement, and real-life activities.

Wooden & Natural Play Toys (for imaginative play)

Outdoor wooden kitchen & grill

Wooden kitchens and grills are some of the best outdoor toys for toddlers. They encourage independent play, spark creativity, and give little ones the opportunity to mimic your actions.

Whenever my husband is doing a barbecue, David is right there beside him, making his own little versions of hamburgers and salads.

An outdoor wooden kitchen is also amazing for toddlers who love cooking. Since he was very little, my son spent a lot of time with me in the kitchen while I cooked. He developed an interest in ingredients, textures, and different ways of chopping and mixing, so I often give him small vegetables to cut, condiments to experiment with, and space to get creative and make his own “dishes.” He learns a lot from this activity — but it also comes with plenty of mess for me to clean up afterward!

Having an outdoor kitchen keeps the mess outside the house and gives him an even wider range of “ingredients” to play with — like leaves, rocks, mud, and branches. It truly encourages imaginative play and lets him express his creativity through pretend cooking.

If you’re passionate about DIY wood projects, you can build the kitchen and grill yourself. It’s a great project to do together with your toddler, and it fits beautifully into a simple living with toddlers lifestyle. But if you prefer to buy one, here are some great recommendations:

I always recommend wooden outdoor toys to keep the natural and aesthetic vibe of your backyard. Wooden grills and kitchens feel cozier and blend perfectly into your countryside decor. Choose natural or pastel colors — I find them much more calming and visually appealing.

Bonus tip: Equip your outdoor kitchen and grill with accessories like small pans, cups, spoons, and other utensils made of wood or stainless steel.

You can reuse items from an old kitchen set or buy them separately.

Here are my recommendations:

Wooden house or play area

Having a wooden house or play area in your backyard is one of the best things you can set up after moving to the countryside.
This isn’t just one of the best outdoor toys for toddlers — it’s also an amazing opportunity for the whole family to take on a fun DIY project together.

Of course, you can buy one already made, and there are so many beautiful models available these days. We did some research and found a few we liked. But then, my husband thought it would be an interesting and fun project to do with my father (his father-in-law). We had a lot of recycled wood in the yard from previous projects, so they decided to use that and only buy the missing pieces.

David was so excited to build a wooden playhouse with his grandpa and dad. They had no experience doing this kind of DIY project, but they did an amazing job together! There’s still some work to be done on the play area, but the main structure is already functional. I don’t know what it is about countryside life with kids and DIY projects, but it’s almost impossible to resist — even if you’ve never done one before.

If you’re curious, I’ll add a few photos to inspire you with our wooden play area. What do you think? Isn’t it the cutest thing ever? Personally, I think this is the best outdoor toy for a toddler we have!

If you’re thinking of buying a wooden house or play area, here is an example.

I truly believe that a small outdoor wooden house can become a whole universe for a child. Whether you build or buy one, it’s one of the best investments you can make for your little one.

This simple outdoor toy encourages imagination and keeps kids engaged for long periods of time. It’s also a perfect playground when you have friends visiting with children. You can even add a small wooden table and chairs so the kids can have snacks or meals together.

You can turn it into a seasonal ritual too — decorating the wooden house and play area for different occasions. For example, add flowers in spring or soft lighting and Christmas decorations in winter.

I’ll write a dedicated article about all the DIY projects we’ve done since moving here. If you want to get notified when I post it (or other cozy countryside topics), consider becoming one of my subscribers. I promise only authentic, useful content — no spam or nonsense ever!

Active Play: Slides, Swings & Sand Fun

Slide and swing combo

If you don’t have the space, time, or budget to build or buy a wooden house but still want something fun for your toddler, a slide and swing combo is a great choice.

Outdoor toys for toddlers are wonderful when they combine entertainment with movement and help keep their little bodies active. Just make sure you set up the slide and swing in a safe area, ideally on tartan or another soft surface.

You can also add them to a wooden house or play area as extra accessories — many models already include options for slides or swings that can be attached later.

That’s exactly what we did. My husband carefully calculated the right angle and height to install a slide and also added a few climbing accessories.

Here are some examples:

Sandbox & sand play accessories

What toddler doesn’t love to play in the sand? Living in the countryside and having enough space to add multiple outdoor toys for toddlers is a perfect way to keep the mess outside the house.

Here is a list for you to choose from:

I truly believe toddlers are born to love a bit of mess — to get dirty, play in the mud, and splash in puddles. Having a sandbox is the best way to let them explore freely, without worrying about constant cleanup.

You can also add sand play accessories, and you’ll have one very busy and happy child. To enhance their play, include simple accessories like buckets, small utensils, and mini construction machines.

For extra comfort, consider adding a tent or shade above the sandbox to protect against the sun. We placed ours under a huge walnut tree, which keeps it naturally shaded. I’ve also seen families install their sandbox directly under the platform of the wooden playhouse, which is such a smart and cozy idea — perfectly fitting the charm of countryside life with kids and simple living with toddlers.

Mini Gardening Tools (for little helpers)

One of our biggest dreams after moving to the countryside was to have our own vegetable garden, along with lots of fruit trees and berry bushes.

We moved in during late spring, so we started right away with organizing and planting.

If you’re interested in learning how to start your garden from scratch as an absolute beginner, consider subscribing to my newsletter — I’ll let you know as soon as I post that article.

So, if you want to buy outdoor toys for toddlers that also teach valuable life skills, consider getting them mini gardening tools.

To make the experience even better for your kids, buy real tools, but ones made safe for them — with materials like soft metal and wood, and rounded tips and corners.

You can include your toddler in small gardening activities that help them learn about nature, plants, and how food grows. I find this experience incredibly fulfilling for children, even at a young age — it perfectly matches the beauty of countryside life with kids and the spirit of simple living with toddlers.

We bought David every gardening tool we use — just in his size — so he can take part in every step of the process.

Here’s our complete list of gardening tools that I consider among the best outdoor toys for toddlers:

  • Mini hammock for children: perfect for outdoor reading, relaxing, or quiet time in nature.
