The Cozy Living Mindset: Embrace Simplicity & Joy
Introduction
The truth is, we live in a hectic world. We’re constantly encouraged to work, stay productive, and keep moving all day long. Add to that the news cycle and the endless stream of trends bombarding us on social media, and it’s no wonder that losing your damn mind feels like a given.
These days, we glorify productivity at all costs—even if that cost is quality sleep. We romanticize being busy: working nonstop or being a parent who somehow still manages to “do it all.” We’re always rushing somewhere, getting easily irritated with time, feeling like there’s never enough of it. And when we finally sit down to read a fantasy book, watch a movie, or do a hobby that’s not considered “productive,” guilt creeps in.
Does any of this sound familiar? It certainly does to me. I spent years watching how society sculpted and shaped our lives to fit a certain mold—one that often sacrifices both our health and our sanity.
Things started to shift for me during the pandemic (yeah, that was a big thing—remember?). My perspective on happiness and the world around me began to change. It didn’t happen overnight, but spending so many weeks—and even months—at home offered a new lens through which to see life.
Slowly, I realized I no longer wanted to rush through mornings, to-do lists, or even meals. Day by day, I came to understand that happiness and fulfillment often come from enjoying life—both the small and the big moments. I began to crave that cozy feeling: the warmth that comes from doing hobbies or work you love, and from living with intention.
In this article, I’ll share what the cozy living mindset really means, why it matters, and how you can gently welcome it into your life—even if everything feels a bit too fast right now.

What Is the Cozy Living Mindset?
I feel like most people associate coziness with blankets, warm beverages, cute coffee mugs, or charming decor—but cozy living goes far beyond aesthetics. Of course, having a cozy bedroom or a reading nook adds to the overall cozy atmosphere, but true cozy living is about rhythm, warmth, intention, and presence.
Sometimes, cozy living overlaps with simple living—embracing an intentional lifestyle and creating or decorating a mindful home. A home where you find peace, recharge, and enjoy life’s small but meaningful moments.
The cozy living mindset looks different for everyone. There’s no one-size-fits-all formula or checklist to follow—and that’s exactly why I’m writing this article. I want to share my own journey with the cozy mindset, hoping others might see themselves in my story or gain a new perspective on what simple, intentional living can look like.
For me, cozy living is a blend of habits, mindset, and physical spaces that reflect who I am. It meant moving from the city to the countryside, planting a garden, learning to cook and enjoy the process, and doing hobbies without guilt.
Cozy living, for me, meant building a mindful home where every detail, piece of decor, or color brings joy to me and my family. It became our cocoon—our refuge—a place we choose to stay in, rather than escape from. For my husband, cozy living meant leaving the corporate world and transitioning to working independently from home.
If any of this resonates with you, keep reading—because in the rest of this article, I’ll walk you through simple yet meaningful steps that can bring you closer to embracing a cozy, intentional lifestyle.
Signs You Might Be Craving a Simpler, Cozier Life
There are already signs telling you that you’re craving a simpler life—even if you haven’t noticed them yet.
To be honest, many of these signs have become so normalized that we just see them as part of everyday life. We often tell ourselves we’re just lazy, tired, or lacking ambition—but I’m here to tell you that’s not true.
Let’s play a little game: how many of these signs sound familiar to you? Because they might just be your life’s way of telling you that you’re longing for a slower, cozier lifestyle:
- You feel overstimulated. No matter how much sleep you get or how much time you take for yourself, that buzzing, overstimulated feeling doesn’t go away.
- You daydream about quiet mornings. Every morning, as you rush to get ready and out the door, you long for a day when you can wake up without an alarm, take your time brewing your coffee, and sip it in bed in your cozy pajamas.
- You feel disconnected from your home. No matter how clean or organized it is, your home doesn’t bring you peace, joy, or a sense of connection to your space.
- You always postpone hobbies. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby or returning to an old one you loved, you keep putting it off.
- You feel guilty taking time for yourself. Any day that isn’t “productive” leaves you with guilt—and you end up feeling bad about yourself.
- A cozy lifestyle feels like a fairytale. Maybe you watch influencers promoting simple living with serene, peaceful routines, and it just seems impossible to achieve in “real” life.
If any—or all—of these sound familiar, know this: your body and mind are trying to tell you something. They’re asking for a shift. You’re craving a different kind of life. And I’m here to help you explore how to simplify things—in a realistic, doable way.

How to Embrace the Cozy Mindset in Your Daily Life
I feel like social media often promotes a version of cozy living that isn’t exactly realistic. Influencers tend to romanticize it in ways that sometimes feel more like a to-do list than a lifestyle. That can create pressure—to buy more stuff, adopt habits that don’t resonate with you, or even change your life in ways that aren’t aligned with your inner self.
For example, I don’t like journaling. I know that might sound strange, especially since I write blog posts and enjoy putting my thoughts into words—but I’m just not a “journal kind of girl.” For years, I tried to build the habit. I bought all the cute journals and colorful pens, but the truth is: it’s just not for me. And that’s totally okay.
For me, the cozy mindset is more about living with intention than about buying the right things or ticking off trendy habits. Sure, a soft, warm blanket can elevate your reading nook—but it’s not mandatory. Maybe for you, cozy means fewer things and more meaningful actions.
So, I created a list of practical steps that can help you embrace cozy living. Before we dive in, I want to be clear: this is not a checklist. You’re not expected to do everything. Think of it as a source of inspiration—something to guide you, not pressure you.
You can explore what feels natural, what brings you comfort, and even experiment to discover what works. There’s no wrong way to start. The only goal is to live more mindfully and intentionally.

Here Are My Practical Steps to Embrace the Cozy Lifestyle and Mindset
Start Small: Create a Cozy Nook
Changing your life can feel overwhelming and exhausting—and sometimes, that feeling is what stops you from even starting your cozy journey.
One of the simplest and most approachable steps you can take today is to create a cozy nook. Because sometimes getting into the cozy mindset is hard and it’s easier to start with making your favorite space look more calm. A cozy environment can induce a cozy mindset if you are like me and are affected by the space you live in or spend time in.
This can be any small or large space in your home that becomes your cocoon. It could be a cozy reading corner, a place where you color, paint, bake your favorite desserts, or just the spot where you love to sip your coffee or tea.
You can add a soft pillow, warm blankets, or use colors that give you good energy.
If you look for inspiration, here are my favorite cozy styles.
For example, I have two cozy nooks. One is in the living room by a big window with a bench, where I read or enjoy coffee while watching my garden. The other one is more private, in my bedroom—a reading corner I retreat to when I need peace and quiet.
Yours can be anywhere in your home or garden, but I suggest you dedicate it solely to yourself and to its intended purpose—not for daily chores or multitasking. That way, it becomes a true sanctuary, a place to go whenever you’re tired, overwhelmed, or simply craving stillness.
Find joy in a Hobby - Without the Pressure
There is so much joy in doing something just for yourself, without expecting any result other than relaxation and inner peace.
I have friends who are so busy with work and home life that they say they don’t have hobbies—because they don’t even know what they like.
I get that completely. We’re so caught up in our daily responsibilities that we don’t allow our minds space to even think about what we enjoy.
If you’re in that space, here are a few hobby ideas that might spark something in you:
- Reading fantasy or fiction books
I roll my eyes every time someone says they only read self-development books because fiction feels like a waste of time. Come on! Let yourself enjoy an epic story. Get swept away in a magical world—it’s powerful, healing, and so worth it. (Maybe I’ll write a list of my favorite cozy fantasy books soon!)
- Coloring books
Adult coloring books are designed for mindfulness and relaxation. If you’re looking for cute and affordable ones, I have a few recommendations.
- Playing video games
There’s a stigma around gaming, but in small doses, it can be an amazing way to unwind. There are plenty of cozy games out there—even if you’re not an experienced gamer.
- Learning a skill for fun
Photography, graphic design, writing, painting… Try learning something new without any pressure to be “good” at it. Just enjoy the process.
- Doing puzzles or LEGO sets
This is one of the best ways to get out of your head and into the moment. Super cozy, super satisfying.
Bake Just Because
How much joy can baking on a random Monday bring you? A lot.
In our busy, corporate-driven lives, we tend to bake only for birthdays or holidays. But the act of baking—those cozy smells of vanilla, cinnamon, or melted chocolate—can turn any regular day into a magical one.
Picture this: you bake a warm banana bread (tip: add chocolate or blueberries), brew your favorite coffee, and enjoy both on your balcony or porch. No rush. No guilt. Maybe add a cozy fantasy book and you’ve just built yourself the perfect moment.
That’s what living with intention means. Doing simple things—not for a result, but because you love the process.
Rethink How You Start the Day
This might be the most basic habit in the cozy mindset handbook. Try it. It changes everything about your day.
Make Room for Joyful Purchases
I love books. I especially love pretty physical books and unique collections. Even though I use my Kindle for most reading, I always look for charming, beautiful editions to add to my cozy library.
Every time I look at my little shelf of cute books, I feel happy—no matter what kind of day I’m having.
My husband? He collects antiques. He loves going to antique shops and flea markets. His finds bring personality and warmth to our home—and that’s what cozy is all about.
Try Journaling (But Only If It Feels Good)
Journaling can be a relaxing ritual, whether you do it in the morning over coffee or at night to wind down. The key is to be present and do it intentionally.
That said, don’t force it. Cozy living is about joy—not adding chores. If you don’t feel like journaling daily, don’t.
(And yes—I’ve collected a bunch of cute journals over the years, even though journaling isn’t really my thing. Guilty!)
Plan Regular Cozy Evenings
Cozy nights are the perfect introduction to intentional living because they’re easy to plan—and the mental health benefits are real.
Pick a night. Grab popcorn, snacks, wine or tea. Choose a movie, anime, or series. Turn off your phone. Dim the lights. Grab a blanket. Just be.
Of course, your cozy night can also mean reading, doing a puzzle, or working on a hobby. Make it yours.
Embrace Hands-On Activities
You already know: cooking, coloring, puzzles, baking—all great ways to ground yourself. They’re tactile, mindful, and cozy.
Plan Cozy, Slow Travel
Traveling doesn’t always have to mean packed itineraries and constant movement. I’ve done those trips (and loved them), but now I deeply enjoy slow travel.
Slow travel is about being present:
- Walk through a forest and listen to the birds
- Hike a mountain and breathe in the silence
- Taste local food and talk to locals
- Skip the photos and just feel the place
Cozy traveling doesn’t mean you have to stay at the pool every day and do nothing (it is perfect if you want that). It is more about doing things with intention, mindful travels where you connect with nature, locals and learn local customs. It is more about tasting traditional recipes and making memories, not only beautiful, instagrammable photos.

Start a Garden (If You Can)
This one isn’t for everyone—but it changed my life.
When we moved from the city to the countryside, we started a small vegetable garden. I rediscovered how healing it is to work with your hands, to care for plants, and to harvest food you’ve nurtured yourself.
There’s something deeply cozy about cooking with the veggies you’ve grown. More on this in a future article. you carried in your garden for months.
More about that in a future article.
Make the Mundane Feel Magical
Drink your coffee from your favorite mug.
Read your book in your favorite spot.
Cook with music and make your kitchen feel like a warm hug.
Wear cozy clothes even when you stay home.
These small things matter. They’re easy. And before you know it, you’ll be living the cozy lifestyle you’ve been dreaming about.
Cozy Mindset vs. Minimalism vs. Aesthetic Trends
I feel like there’s often confusion between the cozy mindset, minimalism, and aesthetic trends.
Let me clarify something important:
Cozy living is more about a feeling—about presence, warmth, and intentionality—than about appearances.
Yes, it can be supported by aesthetics or design choices, but it’s not defined by them.
Cozy vs. Minimalism
While minimalism focuses on reducing the number of objects in your life, cozy living isn’t necessarily about having less.
In fact, having too few things can sometimes create a sense of coldness or emotional distance in your space.
On the other hand, cozy living is about surrounding yourself with the right things—those that bring comfort, peace, and joy.
Intentional living means choosing objects, colors, and textures that help you feel grounded and connected to your space.
Cozy vs. Aesthetic Trends
Aesthetic trends can inspire cozy living, but they aren’t the goal. You don’t need a perfect Pinterest home or a neutral beige palette to feel cozy.
The cozy mindset is about creating a space that nurtures you—your routines, your energy, your creativity.
Yes, you can use design as a tool, but don’t fall into the trap of copying trends that don’t speak to your soul.
Instead, seek out inspiration that reflects your version of coziness. That could be colorful bookshelves, vintage furniture, warm lighting, or a mix of styles that feels “home” to you.
You Can Be a Mix of All Three (Like Me)
Honestly, I’m a bit of everything. I like things organized and minimal in some areas, but I also love meaningful items and cozy corners filled with personality.
Everything in my home has a purpose: it either makes me smile, brings a memory, or supports something I love to do. That’s what intentional living means to me.
So whether your style leans minimalist, aesthetic, eclectic, or traditional—make sure your home reflects what feels right for you. That’s where true coziness begins.
Final Thoughts – Choosing Cozy, One Moment at a Time
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the “requirements” you think you need to meet in order to live a cozy lifestyle—pause. Breathe.
You don’t have to buy anything.
You don’t have to do a full home makeover from day one.
You don’t need a checklist to feel joy.
Start small.
Start with one simple, mundane moment in your day and make it just a little more intentional and comforting.
☕ Maybe that’s enjoying your coffee without rushing.
🚶♀️ Or going on a quiet walk to reflect.
📵 Or planning a cozy, phone-free evening just for yourself.
I’m telling you: you can do this.
It took me years to understand how important this cozy mindset is for my well-being, my family, and my mental health—but I don’t regret a single step of the journey.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about choosing peace, joy, and presence in the everyday.
Even if the world around you keeps shouting “busy,” you can choose to be slow. You can choose cozy.
Stay tuned—I’ll soon share a full guide on how to transform your home into a cozy space with just a few thoughtful changes.
