Rovinj was the first Croatia coastal city we visited during our two-week trip, which included Slovenia and Croatia. My initial impression was that it was a romantic and vibrant place, making every walk around the city a delightful experience.
While strolling through its narrow streets, you’ll come across numerous stunning spots and secluded corners that provide panoramic views of this coastal city. Historical buildings seamlessly blend with colorful ones, creating a memorable charm in Rovinj. The street art adorning some of the walls adds to its visual appeal and serves as the perfect backdrop for idyllic photo shoots.
Rovinj is one of those Croatia coastal cities that can be easily explored on foot. In fact, it may be the only viable option, as there are areas, such as the residential and city center, where car entry is restricted to residents only.
One of the highlights of Rovinj is the breathtaking sunset views, particularly near the port and from the Church of St. Euphemia. These vantage points offer unforgettable vistas of the coastal city.

Before I get into recommending places to stay in Rovinj, keep in mind that in the residential area, you aren’t allowed to enter with your car. I suggest you search for the closest parking lot to the accommodation that you booked.

Pula

Pula’s historical significance and attractions
When we arrived in Pula, I had the impression that maybe we got to Rome somehow. But nope, we were definitely in Croatia, the palm trees and the sea were a testament to that.
If Rovinj had a more romantic and charming allure, Pula is a city where history feels more predominant. It’s a walkable city, so don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes (this is an advice available for all the Croatia coastal cities if I’m being honest).
In this Croatia coastal city, you will encounter the best-preserved Roman ruins in the whole country. It’s possible to visit most of its attractions in just one day and it’s also very close to Rovinj, at approx. 45 minutes car drive. If you are planning a road trip to visit all the Croatia coastal cities you can designate one day in your itinerary for Pula.
What to see in Pula
Here is a list of all the things you should see and do in Pula:
- Visit the Roman amphitheater or the Roman Arena;
- Explore the Old Town;
- Visit the Church and Monastery of St. Francis;

Rovinj and Pula are two cities that are very close to each other. Thus I recommend that if you are planning to add these Croatian destinations to your itinerary, to book accommodation only in one of the two cities.
I would also recommend you pick Rovinj because I find it more interesting than Pula. We stayed in Rovinj and visited Pula one afternoon on our way to our next Croatian destination.

Zadar’s blend of history and modernity
If Rovinj sets a romantic background for couples looking to create beautiful memories, Zadar is sure to captivate you with its breathtaking views and the renowned Sea Organ.
Our day looked something like this: walking the streets and admiring some amazing architecture, inspired by Roman times, while eating delicious ice cream; sitting near the Sea Organ and listening to the interesting sounds it makes. And after that we drank great coffee near the sea. Sounds pretty amazing, right? Honestly, I wish I had more time to discover Zadar’s hidden gems.
In my opinion, Zadar is among the finest Croatia coastal cities and deserves a spot on your travel itinerary. The city itself is unique, but the experience of visiting the Sea Organ and listening to its hauntingly beautiful sounds is a must-do activity I highly recommend.

Split was among the Croatia coastal cities that pleasantly surprised me. All the research I had done and the pictures I had seen of Split paled in comparison to the real experience. The city is stunning, exuding a carefree, beachy vibe. As you explore, you’ll walk past historic buildings, marvel at a diverse range of architectural styles, and encounter historical landmarks and symbols, all while surrounded by tropical palm trees and scenic views of the beautiful sea. I highly recommend exploring this city on foot to fully immerse yourself in its charm.
I was particularly impressed by Split’s architecture, including its ancient buildings, architectural diversity, and intricate details that transport you back in time. The culinary scene is simply amazing, offering a variety of dining options, including Thai food, vegan cuisine, and delectable seafood.
At the heart of the old town lies Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Game of Thrones fans may recognize some of the views, as this is where certain scenes from the epic show were filmed. Diocletian’s Palace is not just a historical landmark; it’s the very place where the city was born. Built by the Roman emperor Diocletian near his birthplace, it spared no expense. The palace complex includes temples, streets, a bathhouse, extensive substructures, and lush gardens, essentially creating a city within a city.

Dubrovnik
Interesting fact:
Did you know that in Dubrovnik, the word “quarantine” was invented? Due to the large number of victims of the Black Death, which affected Europe’s population between 1348 and 1359, the city of Ragusa (now Dubrovnik) ordered that ships be isolated in a restricted place for 40 days before they were granted entry into the city. During those 40 days, if the sailors were seen to develop symptoms of disease they were sent back to sea. The word “quarantine” comes from “quarantine”, the Venetian language form, meaning “forty days”.

To me, there’s nothing quite like walking the narrow streets of a city rich in history and architectural detail. Dubrovnik was such a city and boy, did it deliver! From the vivacious atmosphere to the impeccable views, this city will probably remain one of my favorites I’ve ever been in. Among Croatia coastal cities, Dubrovnik is maybe one of the most popular points of interest in Croatia.
You don’t even need a plan to explore Dubrovnik, just put on some comfortable shoes and a very cute outfit, because there are a lot of Instagrammable places you should take advantage of.

Each of them has something special, but at the same time, they give out that holiday, relaxing atmosphere. What I’ve noticed is that there is a blend of colorful buildings, palm tree promenades, very old historical landmarks, and seaside sunsets that represent each Croatia coastal city. So, the obvious answer is yes, the Croatia coastal cities are worth visiting.
Is Zagreb a coastal city?

This question is indeed a tough one to answer because all of the Croatia coastal cities possess that amazing atmosphere, offering an abundance of things to see and do, along with countless memorable views.
However, if I were to select the most beautiful among Croatia’s coastal cities, my choice would be Split. The city’s unique blend of historical landmarks, stunning beaches, picturesque islands, and the vibrant energy of its promenade make Split the ideal representation of Croatia’s coastal cities.
Split stands out as a remarkable destination that captures the essence of what makes Croatia’s coastal cities so captivating. With its rich history, natural beauty, and lively atmosphere, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring this stunning region.
Is Split or Dubrovnik better?
I believe I’ve already addressed this question when I had to choose my favorite Croatia coastal city. Don’t get me wrong; Dubrovnik is undeniably a beautiful city, and it’s worth a visit. I would even say that it’s essential to include it in your Croatia itinerary if you aim to explore all of Croatia’s destinations and marvels. However, speaking from my personal experience, I must admit that Split truly captured my heart. Every time I reminisce about the Croatian coastal cities I’ve visited, my thoughts invariably drift to Split.
In my opinion, Split offers a unique charm and a special connection that makes it stand out among Croatia’s coastal cities. Its rich history, vibrant atmosphere, and enchanting scenery left a lasting impression on me, making it a city I hold close to my heart.

Of course, Rovinj is worth visiting. I highly recommend you add Rovinj to your Croatia itinerary if you are looking for that perfect romantic getaway. It’s a small and enchanting destination and a must among Croatia coastal cities.
